An heirloom is something special. The true definition is a piece of property that descends to the heir as an inseparable part of an inheritance of real property and/or something of special value handed on from one generation to another.

You may have your mothers wedding dress but have it redesigned for your own wedding. Left overs of the dress can be used for sachets, pillows, doll clothes, etc. It is a way to keep a memory going with a cherished item.

A keepsake is something that you keep to help you remember a person, place, or event. Perhaps it is a shirt from a favorite concert or art show that you just cannot part with. It could become a throw pillow or part of a quilt - or just about anything. The memory lives on and may even one day become a cherished heirloom.

Many times a bride will see a dress she just loves but it does not quite fit the way she would like it or she would like some alterations in length. I create large quilts which are customized using t-shirts and clothing from family members - or even yourself.
